Which campaigns are moving, and when?
Google's original April announcement put all three legacy features on a September timetable. Its June 11 update changed the Dynamic Search Ads (DSA) part: DSA sunset and automatic upgrades will begin in February 2027. Automatically created assets (ACA) and the campaign-level broad match setting remain on the September 2026 auto-upgrade timetable. The revised notice is the one to use when planning work today.
The timing matters because a business can waste time rebuilding DSA campaigns prematurely, or miss a September change in ACA or broad match settings. Check the actual campaign and account notification instead of assuming every Search campaign has the same migration date.
| Legacy feature | Current announced timing | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Automatically created assets | Auto-upgrade begins September 2026 | Review generated text and AI Max feature mapping |
| Campaign-level broad match setting | Auto-upgrade begins September 2026 | Review matching, search terms and exclusions |
| Dynamic Search Ads | Auto-upgrade and sunset begin February 2027 | Inventory DSA ad groups and URL controls; do not assume a September deadline |
A practical pre-upgrade check for a small business
Start with the business outcome, not the toggle. Confirm that the campaign counts the right enquiries or sales and that low-quality actions are not being mistaken for useful conversions. Export a baseline by campaign and landing page before the change; keep date range, spend, conversion definitions and attribution setting visible so later comparisons mean something.
Then inspect what the automation may show and where it may send people. Google's AI Max documentation exposes search-term, asset and landing-page reporting. Final URL expansion can choose other query-relevant pages on your domain; URL exclusions and inclusions are available controls. A thin, outdated or irrelevant page should not become an ad destination just because it exists on the website.
- List campaigns using ACA, campaign-level broad match or DSA; confirm the account's own upgrade notice.
- Record qualified conversion definitions, value, spend and current landing pages before migration.
- Review search terms, brand and location controls, negative keywords and generated text for relevance.
- Check Final URL expansion, URL exclusions and whether pinned ad wording is business-critical.
- Fix slow, misleading or weak landing pages before expecting automation to help.
Should you turn on every AI Max feature now?
Not by default. Google recommends the full AI Max feature suite, but the right decision depends on campaign constraints and the quality of your site and measurement. In particular, Google's Final URL expansion guidance says pinned responsive-search-ad assets may not be respected when another URL is selected. That matters when approved language, a regulated claim or a fixed offer must stay attached to a specific destination.
If the campaign is eligible, an AI Max experiment can split control and treatment within the same campaign. Judge it against qualified enquiries, sales value and cost efficiency, not a temporary rise in impressions. Google lists setup limitations for some campaigns, including shared budgets, portfolio bidding and existing experiments, so check eligibility in the account before promising a test.
What I would monitor after the change
Review the search terms report for new queries, the asset report for off-brand text, and the landing-pages report for destinations that do not match buyer intent. Google's reporting guidance recommends allowing at least two weeks after enabling AI Max before making routine optimisation changes; urgent policy or broken-page fixes are a different matter.
My rule is simple: automation can widen discovery, but the business still owns the offer, page quality and definition of a good lead. If assisted traffic increases while qualified enquiries do not, the answer is usually to inspect intent and destinations before buying more volume. There is no universal uplift to promise, and a platform average is not a forecast for your account.
